For Artissima Art Fair 2023, Cable Depot presents a duo project by Davide Bertocchi and Charlie Warde, with performances by Daniel Nicolaevsky Maria. Through the lens of Olivetti’s legacy, Bertocchi and Warde connect key concerns in their praxis, together poignantly observing the arc from aspiration to obsolescence, memory and reactivation.
On the left wall hangs a marble sculpted of one of Bertocchi’s 35mm cameras, next to a photograph-sized etching on a copper plate by Warde. The image in the etching is reworked from the last photograph taken by Bertocchi’s camera of Olivetti’s campus in Ivrea, before the marble sculpting process destroyed it, monumentalising it into a funerary object.
In the middle of the space, positioned as if frozen in the act of documenting Warde’s work on the central wall, is another marble analogue camera by Bertocchi on a vintage aluminium tripod.
Together all these objects trace the long arc of a Utopian dream of the future which took place in Italy and has been explored by so many Italian artists since, but which touched the whole world - Ivrea is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
